Ingredients:
🍰 For the Cake:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1½ cups peeled, chopped apples (any sweet-tart kind like Honeycrisp, Gala, or Granny Smith)
🍮 For the Pudding Sauce (pours over before baking):
- ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
- 1½ cups boiling water
- 2 tbsp butter
👩🍳 Instructions:
1. Prep the Oven & Dish
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or similar-size deep dish.
2. Make the Cake Batter
- In a large bowl, whisk together:
flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. - Stir in milk, melted butter, and vanilla until just combined.
- Fold in chopped apples.
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared dish.
3. Make the Sauce
- In a small bowl, stir together brown sugar, butter, and boiling water until sugar is mostly dissolved.
- Gently pour this mixture over the batter without stirring.
(It’ll look weird, but trust the magic — it turns into a rich caramel pudding layer underneath as it bakes!)
4. Bake
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until the top is golden and cake-like and a toothpick comes out clean.
- The bottom will be a bubbling, saucy pudding.
5. Cool Slightly & Serve
- Let it sit for about 10 minutes so the pudding thickens a bit.
- Spoon into bowls and serve warm with:
- Vanilla ice cream
- Whipped cream
- Or a drizzle of heavy cream
🍁 Optional Add-ins:
- A handful of chopped pecans or walnuts
- A splash of apple brandy or bourbon in the sauce
- Swap ½ the milk for apple cider for extra apple flavor
